This is the fifth of seven drawings (PAI4653-PAI4659) which record Fanshawe's inland excursion to see the Andes, while his ship 'Daphne' was at Valparaiso over the winter of 1850-51. For the general circumstances see PAI4563. Fanshawe and his travelling companion from the 'Daphne', Mr Young, went north on horseback from Santiago on Monday 13th and slept at Chacabuco that night. 'Next morning we crossed the Cuesta de Chacabuco - very magnificent; and instead of going direct to San Felipe, which is the usual course of tourists, we turned right and went to Santa Rosa [de Los Andes], the prettiest town we saw, and with the best view of the Andes.' (Fanshawe [1904] p. 267). They spent the nights of the 14th and 15th at San Felipe, which Fanshawe described as a 'dull town'. This view appears to look north or slightly north-east from the Chacabuco pass, with the Andes rising beyond San Felipe.
