Sea attack on a coastal town inscribed 'HMS Tribune 31 Amazona 36 / Arica - Peru - attacked by / the Revolutionary squadron of / General Vivanco - 25 Nov 1857'

The context is the 1856-58 civil war in Peru between two factions, one under general Ramon Castilla –who was the president of the Republic- and the other under general Manuel Ignacio Vivanco who was leading an insurrection. “Amazona”, probably refers to the Peruvian frigate Amazonas. The scene most likely depicts the bombardment of Arica by Vivanco’s ship Apurimac on 21st February 1858, which is the only occasion in the war when Arica was bombarded. The Peruvian frigate Amazonas had been sent to Hong Kong for repairs and then it went on sailing to complete the first Peruvian circumnavigation and was, therefore, absent from the civil war.
