Getting the dogs ready for the southern journey.

A general view across the ice towards the starboard side of the Discovery (1901), partially covered with banked-up snow. In the foreground are men packing sledges or getting some of the dogs ready in harness. Other dogs are already sitting waiting in harness. The bow of the ship is out of the photograph. The preparations for the journey south included getting the 19 dogs ready and packing five sledges.
