An Emperor penguin with its young
An Emperor penguin with its chick balanced on its feet. In the background are two unidentified men in their polar clothing.
Between 10 September and 24 October, Royds and Koettlitz had travelled to the south-west with Evans, Quartley, Lashly and Wild. Their aim was to leave a record at Cape Crozier, Ross Island, for any relief ship to find. On this journey a colony of Emperor penguins was discovered, and among them were several which were nursing chicks.
