A view from the main top of 'Discovery' (1873) in her ice dock, looking northward up Dobbin Bay. The ice in the foreground is 'young' ice, with icebergs possibly from the Empress Eugenie Glaciers. 'Alert' (1856) and 'Discovery' steamed up Dobbin Bay on 14 August 1875 and secured to the land ice at about 5.30pm. At 6pm they commenced to cut an ice dock for each ship, finishing at about 9.30pm. On 15 August the ships left the docks after blasting a passage through the ice to a lead off Cape Louis Napoleon.
