View from near 'Discovery' (1873) looking eastward with possibly Hans 'the Esquimeaux' in foreground.

Discovery Harbour, Lady Franklin Sound (Bay). View from near 'Discovery' (1873) looking eastward with possibly Hans 'the Esquimeaux', the dog sledge and five dogs in foreground and middle distance. The observatories in the background on the lower slopes of Mount Cartmel and Mount Cairn. Note the figure standing next to the tide gauge tripod. The date is uncertain for Captain Stephenson took an expedition on 21 September that consisted of Hans and his dog sledge. However, Hans with Lt. Archer returned on 22 September as Archer had fallen through the ice and required a change of clothes. Note that the ice has not fully formed between the shore and the foreground, which it had by the end of September 1875.
