A view from the Island of Kangitok looking eastward.
A view from the Island of Kangitok looking eastward. Due to the foggy weather on leaving Upernarvik on 22 July 1875 the ships stopped at a group of islands. Here 'Alert' (1856) went aground at 7.15am after touching a rock and being pushed onto it further by 'Discovery' (1873), which was under tow at the time. 'Alert' had to wait until the tide rose, getting off at 11.50am. The crews of both ships had time to go ashore, the officers taking their guns.
