A view of the head of a Musk Oxen
A view of the head of a Musk Oxen. These were hunted for both sport and food, especially after the appearance of scurvy in 1876. The abundance of Musk Oxen around Lady Franklin Sound (Bay) was one of the factors for Captain Nares using it as the winter quarters for 'Discovery'. One of these specimens was brought back to England and exists in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
