A view taken at the southern cape of Wrangle Bay of three men having halted for luncheon on the way from 'Discovery' (1873) to 'Alert' (1856)

A view taken at the southern cape of Wrangle Bay of three men with the dogs and dog sledge having halted for luncheon on the way from 'Discovery' (1873) to 'Alert' (1856). One of the three men is thought to be Captain Stephenson. The others on this expedition to 'Alert' were Thomas Mitchell, Dougal (Ice Quarter Master), Petty (RM) and Hans 'the Esquimaux'. They departed from 'Discovery' at 1045 on 18 April, and arrived at 'Alert' on 23 April, after one day delay due to bad weather. The top of the portable stove is just visable behind the man sitting on the ice.
