'Discovery' (1873) surrounded by loose ice in Discovery Harbour, Lady Franklin Sound (Bay).

Starboard stern quarter view of 'Discovery' (1873) surrounded by loose ice in Discovery Harbour. Taken from the slopes of Mount Cartmel, looking northwest towards Mount Ovibos [left] and the high cliffs of the north coast. On 20 July 1876 Lieutenant Archer used explosives to clear the ice away from the ship, and as the ice disappeared the crew were employed in retrieving all the stores from the shore. From then on the ice drifed about the harbour depending upon the wind and tide. The funnel was raised on 6 August and the ship was ready for sea on 10 August. On 11 August 'Alert' (1856) arrived in Discovery Harbour and went alongside 'Discovery'. 'Alert' departed on 13 August to try to reach Lieutenant Beaumont's party, which was understood to still be in Polaris Bay recovering from scurvy. However, she was detained at the entrance by heavy ice, and on 14 August Beaumont's party arrived on board.
