A photograph of the brass plate engraved for the grave of Captain Hall, the leader of the U.S. 'Polaris Expedition' who died in 1871. The plate was photographed before leaving England. Captain Stephenson of 'Discovery' (1873) with Henry C. Hart (Naturalist) set out for Polaris Bay, overtaking Lieutenant Fulford and his party transporting two boats in preparation for the return Lieutenant Beaumont's North Greenland Party. On 13 May 1876, the American flag was hoisted, and this brass plate was erected at the foot of Captain Hall's grave. Captain Stephenson then returned to 'Discovery' on 18 May.
