'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach, on the north coast of Ellesmere Island

A distant starboard view of 'Alert' (1856) in Winter Quarters at 'Floeberg Beach, on the north coast of Ellesmere Island. The awning that covered the upper deck between the fore and main masts has been removed, but the spars are still lashed in place between the masts. The background is part of the coastline of Ellesmere Island looking to the south west, not north west as stated in the official catalogue. The ship is partially obscured by the build-up of grounded floe bergs on the shoreline.
