The Santa Maria

Halftone reproduction of a photograph of a late nineteenth-century reconstruction of the 'Santa María'. The original 'Santa María' was launched in 1460 and was the largest of three ships used by Christophen Columbus in his first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. The reconstruction shown in this photograph was built by Spanish workmen in 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of the expedition. It was sailed to America for the World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, in Chicago in 1893. Mounted on page with PAI3131, and in album with PAI3062-PAI3423.
