Diary kept by James McKay while serving on HMS LANCASTER in the Mediterranean. It describes life in the engine room and below decks. Also James describes in great detail the places he visited such as Gibraltar, Malta, Egypt, and Algeria. Included is a poem about longing for Scotland.

Administrative / biographical background
5 September 1914 James McKay was serving serve as Artificer Engineer on HMS PATHFINDER which was torpedoed by a German submarine. The engine room and magazine were struck. The force of the combined explosion tore the ship in two and she sank in around five minutes.
