Administrative / biographical background
Thomas Knight Leslie was born in Edinburgh in 1860. He was employed as a boy, apprentice, able seaman and then second mate on the barque ROSEAU (1857), owned by Thomas Scrutton of London, from 1875 onwards. His certificate of competency as second mate was issued at Goole in September 1880 (certificate number 08791). He drowned after falling from the rigging of the ROSEAU off the Cape of Good Hope in December 1880.
