Francis Reynalds was an apprentice to various ships in the 1780's and became mate to the ARNO in 1790 and also voyaged to Rotterdam in the same year, in the SARAH. He left the ARNO for the PIEDMONT in 1792 to Ancona; then from Hull to London, where the ship was sold. In 1793 he served as mate to Captain Maxwell of the BETSEY. Reynalds was promoted captain of the SALERNO and TUSCAN, also in 1793 and was later captain of the brig OLIVE BRANCH in 1794. Francis Reynalds was captured off Cape St. Vincwent on 7 October 1795 and witnessed the Spithead mutiny of 1797. He was appointed to the SELINA in 1800 and sailed for Leghorn via Gibraltar. He took command of the NANCY in 1802 and in the following year commanded the SELINA and then the CHARLES WILLIAM until 1806 to command the ALBION transport ship. His diary continues to 23 May 1810.
