Administrative / biographical background
John Dand was born at Wigton, Cumberland, in 1831. He worked in the shipyard at Glasson Dock before becoming carpenter on the barque SIR HENRY POTTINGER (1845), owned by the Brocklebank Line Ltd of Liverpool. During a voyage to Chile between March and December 1858 he received instruction in navigation from the master Robert Barnes and kept his own log. Later in life Dand worked as clerk and accountant to the Workington School Board. He died at Workington in 1890.
